Marevivo Onlus has launched a national project to enhance the training of future maritime professionals in Italy. This initiative involves several Italian Nautical Institutes and aims to provide comprehensive education for students in the maritime sector. As part of this project, a seminar titled "New Strategies for the Study of Sandy Beaches. The PRIN PNRR BERMS Project" was held at the IISS Archimede Institute in Taranto by the MAREVIVO-PUGLIA delegation.
During the event, Professor Massimo Moretti, Principal Investigator of the BERMS project, discussed the project's objectives and its impact on the study and management of sandy beaches. The seminar explored the latest strategies for understanding these ecosystems and emphasized their importance for environmental conservation and sustainability. Students and professors from the institute actively participated in the event, engaging in discussions about the implications of the research and its practical applications.
The seminar program was rich and diverse, spanning multiple days from April 1st to April 4th, and included both indoor and outdoor activities. The first day featured presentations on various topics, including ecological transition, biodiversity conservation, and the environmental transformations of Taranto.
On the second day, students participated in outdoor activities focused on environmental awareness, including a beach cleaning initiative at a local site. This hands-on approach allowed students to connect theory with practical action, while also fostering a sense of responsibility towards the marine environment.
The final days of the event included discussions on the evolution of the seas in Taranto, the fate of plastic in marine environments, and the ecological importance of Taranto's marine species. The program concluded with a boat excursion in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto, offering participants an immersive experience in the area's rich biodiversity.
Through this initiative, Marevivo Onlus and the PRIN PNRR BERMS project are not only contributing to the scientific understanding of marine ecosystems but also inspiring the next generation of maritime professionals to engage actively in the protection and sustainable management of our oceans and beaches.
