At the International Sedimentological Congress (ISC 2026), held in Wellington from January 25 to January 30, 2026, Dr. Teresa Fracchiolla, a research fellow at the Department of Earth and Geo-Environmental Sciences of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro,” presented the key findings of the BERMS (Beach EnviRonMentS) project.
The study, developed in collaboration with the Universities of Bari and Calabria, introduces an interdisciplinary and standardized methodology for monitoring sandy beaches subject to wave action. Through the detailed analysis of three coastal areas in southern Italy, the research integrates granulometric analyses, geophysical surveys (GPR and ERT), 3D mapping using laser scanners, and biological monitoring of habitats.
The proposed approach offers a robust scientific foundation for adaptive governance, supporting public authorities in biodiversity protection and the sustainable management of coastal resources.
