Advancing Knowledge on Coastal Erosion and Beach Resilience
Published: 28 July 2026
The BERMS project has been featured in Geologicamente Magazine, the magazine of the Italian Geological Society, within its GeoSed section dedicated to sedimentology and related research initiatives.
The article highlights BERMS as a leading example of interdisciplinary research addressing one of the most pressing challenges affecting coastal environments: understanding sediment dynamics and assessing the vulnerability of sandy beaches to erosion. Led by the University of Bari Aldo Moro (PI Prof. Massimo Moretti) in collaboration with the University of Calabria (RU Prof. Salvatore Critelli), the project brings together expertise in sedimentology, geomorphology, geophysics, and ecology to investigate coastal processes and support sustainable shoreline management.
According to the article, BERMS employs a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach that combines topographic surveys, geophysical investigations, sediment characterization, biological monitoring, and numerical modelling. Conducted across several coastal sites in Southern Italy, the research has enabled scientists to quantify sediment budgets, monitor shoreline changes, and identify the areas most vulnerable to erosion.
The feature in Geologicamente Magazine represents an important recognition of the scientific value and societal relevance of the project. By providing new insights into the evolution of Mediterranean coastal systems under increasing environmental and climate pressures, BERMS is contributing to the development of evidence-based strategies for coastal adaptation, resilience, and sustainable management.
